This document is a sampling and analysis plan (SAP) for the collection of market squid (Loligo opalescens) from two recreational fishing piers in King County, WA: Seattle Pier 86 and Redondo Pier in Des Moines. This will be the first effort by King County to collect squid for tissue chemistry since 1997. The sampling effort described here will provide updated results to assess present-day human health risks from squid consumption. Squid will be collected around high tide using a rod and reel with one to four squid jigs, illuminated by a light from the pier.
Squid will be cleaned according to common cooking procedures used by recreational squidders as documented by the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife before being added to a composite tissue sample. The squid tissue will be analyzed for lipids, polychlorinated biphenyls (measured using both homologs and Aroclors), polybrominated diphenyl ethers, metals (including mercury), pesticides, butyltins, and base-neutral-acid extractables. Results (when appropriate) will be compared to previous sampling results from 1997 as well as fish tissue-equivalent concentrations of water quality criteria applicable to Washington.
