West Point Flooding Event 2017 English Sole Muscle Tissue Chemistry Report

The West Point Treatment Plant (West Point) experienced equipment failure in the winter of 2017. This report presents the chemistry results for English sole (Parophyrys vetulus) muscle tissue data collected as part of ongoing King County and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) marine fish monitoring surveys. This document describes the results of post-event monitoring of English sole in 2017 for toxic chemicals in their muscle tissues.

The muscle chemistry results suggest that concentrations of metals and organic chemicals in English sole collected near West Point and Elliott West outfalls were not significantly higher than those in samples collected from other Puget Sound stations in 2017. However, there is uncertainty regarding the PBDE results due to differences observed in concentrations detected in samples analyzed by both King County and WDFW from the same location. In 2019, English sole will be monitored again for the same chemicals which may assist with understanding changes in PBDEs.
