Volunteer monitoring began at Lake Francis in the 1996 and continued through 2008, after which it was discontinued. The data indicated that this lake was moderately colored and fairly high in primary productivity (mesotrophic to threshold eutrophic) with good to fair water quality. Productivity varied over time, but no significant trends have been validated.
The lake is too shallow for profile sampling. Nitrogen to phosphorus ratios have been consistently above 20:1, which generally favors other algae over bluegreens.
Lake Francis has no public access, but residents should monitor aquatic plants growing nearshore to catch early infestations of noxious aquatic weeds.

The average of these three TSI indicators during the growing season can be used to place lakes in one of three broad categories: <40 = oligotrophic (low productivity), 40 to 50 = mesotrophic (moderate productivity) >50 = eutrophic (highly productive).
