Step One: Lay out your edge
Lay out the edge of your bed using a flexible material such as a garden hose, string, or even sprinkled flour. Curving edges may look more natural and aesthetically pleasing depending on your particular space.

Step Two: Cut the trench and remove the sod
It is very important to cut a trench out that is the width of the edging material that you'll be using. Remove the sod to prevent weeds and grass crossing the barrier. A wide, durable edging material buys you more time before the grass can grow across and put down roots in your new bed.
