Step Five: Lay down mulch
In general, it is good to lay down about 4 inches of mulch if your soil really needs a boost, lay down an inch or two of compost first and cover it with about 3 inches of mulch. Woody mulch is the best because it discourages weed growth so effectively. Keep mulch a few inches away from stems or trunks of trees and shrubs to prevent rot and pest damage.

Maintenance
Because mulch naturally becomes soil, you will need to reapply the top layer after it breaks down. Unlike lawns which require more effort as they age, your new landscapes will take more effort in the beginning. Expect to water and weed regularly for the first few years while your new plants establish themselves and the beds fill in
